Hirschfeld Awarded Galveston Causeway Railroad Bridge

Expanding horizons on yet another front, Hirschfeld Industries has been awarded the contract for fabrication of the Galveston Causeway Railroad Bridge in Galveston County, Texas. This single track vertical lift span bridge will be adjacent to the existing railroad bridge constructed nearly 100 years ago. Reaching out across the Intercoastal Waterway at Mile 357.2, spanning 382- feet long with two additional flanking deck girder spans, the bridge is complete with a lifting and locking mechanical system.

Owner, Galveston County, awarded this project to a General Contractor joint venture of Cianbro Corp. (Pittsfield, Maine) and Brasfield & Gorrie LLC (Birmingham, Alabama). The distinctive redesign of the causeway bridge was set in place by Structural Engineer, Modjeski and Masters, based in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

The majority of the 2,583 tons of structural steel will be fabricated in Hirschfeld’s San Angelo plant and trucked to a yard 2 miles up the waterway from the site, on the North side of the Galveston Bay, where it will be field assembled into a complete truss bridge. The complete assembly will then be floated down stream and placed on the piers. Scheduled completion date is May of 2012.
